Anytime Fitness - Southsea
The project involved the full fit-out of a premium gym within a former Debenhams retail unit that had been stripped back to a bare shell by the developer in preparation for a new occupier. We worked closely with the architect and the franchise team throughout the tender process and were successfully appointed to deliver the project.
The Challenge
The nature of the gym required a high level of acoustic performance, particularly within the free weights areas, to control noise and vibration. In addition, the project was delivered alongside ongoing developer works, including the installation of sprinkler systems, DDA-compliant ramped access, incoming mains services, cold water supply, and drainage. These simultaneous activities required careful coordination to avoid disruption to the programme. Further challenges arose due to ongoing water ingress into the unit, which had the potential to impact progress if not managed quickly.
The Solution
To meet the acoustic requirements, a specialist floor build-up was installed throughout most of the space. The free weights area incorporated a 120mm-thick rubber gym flooring system, while the main gym floor was constructed as a floating floor over a specialist acoustic rubber underlay. Our team carefully planned and sequenced works around the developer’s activities, maintaining close communication to ensure all elements were integrated smoothly. Despite the sites water ingress issues, we adapted our approach and continued with the fit-out in unaffected areas while working collaboratively with the developer as the problems were resolved.
The project was delivered successfully with no impact on the overall construction programme. The completed fit-out provides a premium gym environment with a high-quality finish and a strong, modern aesthetic, meeting both the technical performance requirements and the client’s expectations.
